Vehicle Marking Instructions - First Cdn Army Signals - Oct 1942

FIRST CANADIAN ARMY SIGNALS
VEHICLE MARKING

(See "Regulations Regarding the employment, control, Marking and Lighting of Canadian Military Vehicles", and also Overseas R.O. 1125, "Vehicle mrking, 1941".)

1. Formation signs
     (a) The fomation sign will be painted on the left fron mudgaurd on all types of vehicles which have mudgaurds, except motorcycles.
     (b) Formation signs will not be carried on motorcycles.
     (c) On vehicles without mudguards, the formation sign will be painted in a position corresponding as nearly as possible to the left front mudgaurd.
     (d) Formation signs will be painted in a prominent position on the right side of the rear of all vehicles, except motor cycles.
     (e) The formation sign for vehicles shall be a rectangle 6 1/2" x 9", coloured red-black-red, on which shall be superimposed a Maple Leaf painted in gold.
     (f) The red portion shall be in Cardinal Red, and the Maple Leaf in light Gold.

2. Unit signs
      (a) The unit sign shall be a Cardinal Red '9', superimposed on a white-and-blue background (upper half white); the whole sign shall for a rectangle 8 1/2" x 9 1/2".
      (b) In the case of vehicles other than motorcycles that Unit Sign will be painted on the left front mudguard, but so located that it will no obscure the Formation Sign.
      (c) In the case of motorcycles the Unit sign will be painted on each forward end of the petrol tank, and on the read mudguard.
      (d) In the case of vehicles other than motorcycles the Unit sign will be painted in a prominent position on the left side of the read of the vehicle.
      (e) Unit signs will NOT be painted on, nor fitted to trailers.

3. Bridge Classification Signs
      (a) The bridge classification sign will be a yellow disc on which the bridge classification number will be pained in black. The bridge signs will be fitted to or painted on the right side of the vehicle between the radiator and the outer edge of the mudguard. On vehicles without mudguards, the bridge sign will be in a position corresponding as nearly as possible to that detailed in this subparagraph.
      (b) Motorcycles will not be allotted bridge signs.

4. W.D. Numbers
      (a) W.D. Numbers will be painted in white on each door of all lorries. It will also be painted on the tailboard, 4" above the tailboard hinge. On Station Wagons the number will be painted on each side of teh engine hood and the curved rear portion of the top. On Jeeps the number will be painted on each side of the engine hood and on hte left side of teh rear above the Formation Sign.
      (b) The W.D. Number will be painted on the right hand side of the petrol tank of the motorcycle.

5. Tactical Signs
      (a) Tactical Signs will be painted in yellow letters and figures in accordance with Appendix A and B to the circular.

6. General
      (a) The Unit Number will be painted in Black figures 4" high on the white rear axle in such a manner that the rear axle lighting permits it to be readily discernible from a following vehicle.
      (b) No unauthorized markings will be painted on vehicles.
      (c) For position of markings see appendix "A" attached.
