Signalman Smith was an Electrician (Sigs). A member of 1 Canadian Army Tank Brigade Signals, he was attached to 14 Canadian Army Tank Battalion (14 Cdn Army Tank Bn), one of the Canadian units that conducted the Dieppe raid on 19 Aug 1942. Of the 6 Officers and 72 Other Ranks of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals that participated in the raid, Sig Smith was one of eight killed in action (KIA).
