Brass signal tube detail 3

Lorne Swan writes "This piece was given to me years ago by a fellow in Edmonton [Alberta, Canada]. It's about fourteen inches long, two inches across the mouth and half an inch at the threaded end. I didn't get a photo of the asterisk that is punched into the bell opposite the makers tag. I don't know what it was used for. Could you assist me with its identification?"
