The role of a Motor Air-Line Section in the First World War was to provide line communications between a corps and its subordinate divisions. As the number of divisions within a corps was not fixed, the establishment was kept separate from the Corps Signal Company War Establishment and the required number of motor air-line sections would be attached to the company as needed.
