Operation Neptune, also commonly known as D-Day, was the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy France during the Second World War.[1] The landings, part of the larger Operation Overlord, occurred on 6 June 1944 and began the liberation of France (and later western Europe) laying the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. The Signals components of the Canadian force involved in Operation Nepture were mainly elements of 3rd Canadian Divisional Signals (3 Div Sigs).

Casualties

On 6 June, four members of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, all members of 3 Canadian Divisional Signals, lost their lives:

Lt R.B. Murchison - Was with the Regina Rifles HQ and was killed when his landing craft struck a mine.
Cpl N.A. Hauk - Was the wireless operator for a forward artillery observation officer and came in on the assault in a light craft. Craft received a direct hit and was destroyed on the run in.
L/Cpl E.G. Swan - Was operating an Artillery wireless set when a mortar bomb fell close to his party, instantly killing him.
L/Cpl F.M. Trainor - Suspected drowning.
