Corporal Frank Rousell, (aka Roussell), (31 May 1895 - 14 April 1967) was a Canadian soldier who served in the First World War Canadian Engineer Signal Service and was awarded the Military Medal.

Early Life

Frank was born 31 May 1895 in Paris Ontario to parents Alexander William Rousell and Marion Cameron.

He attestation form lists his occupation as electrician and his marital status as single.

Service

Frank originally joined the 38th Regiment prior to attesting for service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force with the 76th Battalion at Niagara Ontario. He sailed from Montreal on 1 October 1915 aboard the S.S. Scandanavian and arrived in England on the 10th. Transferred to the 39th Battalion on 4 November 1915, he was subsequently transferred to the Canadian Engineer Training Deport on 7 February 1916.[1]

On 29 May 1916 Frank arrived in France as part of "CA" Cable Section, Canadian Corps Signal Company. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 14 August and soon after he was awarded the Military Medal[2] for exemplary service in September. He was transferred to HQ Section, Canadian Corps Signal Company on 16 February 1917 with whom he served for the remainder of the war. In March 1917 he reverted in rank to Sapper but was made an Acting Corporal on 28 April 1917. He was later confirmed in the rank on 7 May 1919.

In June 1919 he returned to Canada and was demobilized.

Military Medal Citation

The citation for his Military Medal read:

Worked under continuously heavy shell fire from POZIERES to the front line from June 7th to 15th September 1916, assisting Cpl S.C. Moule in jointing and sorting the pairs of cables, so skillfully that only one faulty joint was subsequently found. He worked with-out rest under these conditions for nine days and during five of these he had no rest at all.

Personal Life

After the war, Frank appears to have become a Civil Engineer.[3]

Frank married Edna Anne Blanche Moore on 1 February 1928 at Victoria, Ontario.[3]

Frank died on 14 April 1967 and is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Cayuga in Haldimand County, Ontario.[4]
