The motorized schooner "Velox" and a boat variously described as a barge or scow were purchased to provide transportation to and from Aklavik's summer station at Herschell Island, to haul wood into the settlement in the spring and for fall fishing. During the 1930 season the Velox logged 1661 miles (using 442 gallons of gasoline) in some of the most difficult boating conditions possible.
