The
Switchboard Field 10 Line Mark 236, also known as a 10-line cordless exchange, is a 10-line Great War era switchboard used to terminate tactical phone lines. Used up to and during the Second World War, it featured a calling generator, night bell and speaking set, the whole unit is in a self contained wood case 15.5" by 14" by 7" with weather proof cover and leather carrying handle, the whole unit weighing approximately 40 lbs. The front of the instrument has hinged doors which are opened up for operating; the back has a sliding panel to give access to the internal wiring of the instrument and cells. A battery consisting of two cells inert "Q" or dry W, is used for the speaking and night bell circuits.
