7 Communication Group was authorized to be formed as a formation of the Canadian Armed Forces by Ministerial Order signed on 11 April 2016[1]. The authorization was concurrent with the disbandment of Canadian Forces Shared Services Group. Upon creation, 7 Comm Gp had, as units under command:

7 Communication Group Headquarters
76 Communication Regiment
Shared Services Unit (Atlantic)
Shared Services Unit (Central)
Shared Services Unit (East)
Shared Services Unit (West)

On 31 May 2016, a new unit, 77 Line Regiment was authorized and assigned to 7 Comm Gp[2] with the Shared Services Units being made sub-units of it. This resulted in the current formation consisting of:

7 Communication Group Headquarters
76 Communication Regiment
77 Line Regiment
