Brigadier Philip E. Earnshaw....

Service

Earnshaw served in various Signals units during the Great War. He was awarded the Military Cross[1] in 1916, was Mentioned in Despatches[2] in 1918 and awarded the Distinguished Service Order[3] in 1919.

The 1923 Militia Report[4] states that Major P. Earnshaw, D.S.O., M.C., had left the College to take up an appointment in the Canadian Permanent Force.

On 15 November, 1941 the Newfoundland Militia was incorporated into the Canadian Command. Brigadier Philip Earnshaw became Commander of the Combined Newfoundland and Canadian Military Forces in Newfoundland.[5] For his service during the Second World War, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.[6]

Military Cross Citation

Awarded the Military Cross in 1916[1] with the following citation related to the Battle of the Somme:
For conspicuous gallantry in action. He established and maintained communications throughout the operations under very heavy fire, displaying great courage and determination. He set a splendid example to his men.
