The Malloch Trophy is named in honour of Lieutenant-Colonel F.G. Malloch who, while President of the Canadian Signals Association, provided an antique sterling silver tankard as a Challenge Trophy for annual competition in General Proficiency by Signal Companies.[1] The award was first presented in 1928 and continued to be awarded annually until 1938 but stopped when the Second World War commenced.

In 1950, the competition rules for the Malloch Trophy were changed. Originally awarded to the best NPAM signal company, after the Second World War and the institution of the Genet and Jimmy Trophies, it was decided that the Malloch Trophy would be awarded to the RCCS Reserve/Militia signal unit that had the highest combined score in the Genet and Jimmy trophies.

In 1953, the original Malloch Trophy was stolen, but a replica was donated by 2 Divisional Signals, Toronto.

In 1972, the rules were revised again – the Trophy then being awarded to the best signal unit in Canada chosen from the five regional winners. The last year the Malloch Trophy was awarded was 1990 and it now resides at the Military Communications and Electronics Museum.[2]
