Northwest Territories and Yukon Radio System
Active 1923 – 1960
Garrison/HQ Yellowknife

The Northwest Territories and Yukon Radio System established in order to provide communications to Canada's Far North. The Department of Interior, searching for some reliable and rapid means of communication to cover the vast areas involved in the northland and realizing the possibilities of wireless telegraphy, asked the Defence Department to consider the installation of Army Radio stations, with all expenses to be borne by the Department of the Interior. Established in 1923, the first stations were Dawson City and Mayo. In 1957 the Canadian Government ordered that the station's of the system be handed over to the Department of Transport. This was accomplished over the following few years and in 1960 the system was shutdown.
